Al-Zubayr al-Awwam was one of the companions of the Prophet (S) and Khadija's nephew. He embraced Islam when he was 8 and accompanied the Prophet (S) ever since. After the Prophet's demise, al-Zubayr did not accept the verdict issued by Saqifa council about the succession of the Prophet (S); instead, he defended the caliphate of Ali (AS) and had various discussions with Umar. He was one of the six people appointed by the second caliph for choosing the next caliph and voted in favor of Ali (AS). He played a vital role in the uprising against Uthman which led to his murder. However, at the beginning of Imam Ali's caliphate period; he launched the Battle of Jamal against Imam Ali (AS), in which he was killed.
Zubayr ibn al-Awwam also distinguished himself for his military strategy and combat excellence, with many Muslim scholars referring and praising his competence in the battlefield, particularly the Battle of the Trench. After the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Zubayr refused to acknowledge Abu Bakr as the successor of the Prophet, and this was one of the reasons for the conflict between Zubayr and Abu Bakr.
Zubayr also played a role in educating and preserving Islamic teachings, as he helped in the collection and recording of the Quran, a significant religious duty. In addition, Zubayr was known for his physical appearance, being described as a tall and strong built man.
